I tore the extensor tendon on my right thumb. I had surgery to repair the tendon but during the recovery time, the tendon tore again. My surgeon said that he doesn’t think a second surgery would help so he is denying a second repair. What is the success rate of a second surgery to repair this tendon? And how much time can pass before it’s impossible to have another repair? Thank you.

how do you know if you have a torn tendon? i basically karate chopped my left hand on the metal frame of an arcade game and something popped and i immediately swelled up. it was in zone 2. my hand went ice cold and white. i got x rays done, no broken bones. they put a fiberglass cast & prescribed 800mg ibuprofen 3xs a day. it’s been almost 3 weeks, and i still can’t make a fist, apply pressure, or spread my finger.

Hi Doc, i injured my pinky on the 23 of November when that happened my finger got purple and very swollen at the moment of the incident but now the swollen went down and the bruising went away but know I can do a fist with out my pink hurting or make a complete fist could it be possible that I have a tendon tor?

I just had a sideways laceration injury with a kitchen knife (the grip slided as i stabbed a cutting board with the edge facing my palm -bad idea-) on both my pinky (right on the wrinkles of the middle phalanx joint) and ring finger slightly bellow in the middle of the third phalanx (on the fleshy cheek by the side -the one where the finger starts-). Went to the doctor and she told me i didnt cut any tendons. I can feel them just like normal, all of the surface, pressure heat and cold. I can bend both on the middle joint but the fingertip phalanx wont bend on either. I got a hand examination by a hand specialist and she just stitched me and told me to do hand therapy. Any advice for my case? thanks in advance.

One thing i forgot to add. The inability to bend the fingertip was inmediate after the injury, the doctor cut open the pinky and saw the tendon in place. Its being 1 week and is not that swollen, even with the stitches still there and it barely hurts (it hurted only on the stitches for 3-4-5 days after injury and it doesnt hurt at all now when i try to make a fist, altho the figertips still paralysed ) the cut on the ring finger was minimal around 4mm wide and 2-3mm deep so they didnt cut it open (the zig-zag like cut), yet its as pralysed as the pinky.

Great educational video. I have a question i hope you can answer this, I couldn’t find any answers on google. Do you know what happens if you leave the lacerated tendon untreated? And how many days can be delayed since laceration before surgery is no longer an option? I accidentally cut my zone two ring finger a few months ago i went to the er they just sutured the wound and didn’t tell me to comeback i thought my inability to clench my zone 1 ring finger joint was because it was painful due to the cut so i thought id let it heal but it’s been months and I can’t afford surgery in the US right now, i tried working everywhere to save money but my left hand is too weak to do anything. I’ve been laid off at a few places because of my lack of strength. I just turned 20 years old a week ago. I love boxing and working out but I can’t lift much weight and clench my fists. It’s been really hard lately i hope you can answer some of the questions thank you.
