You guys are throwing around many terms unfamiliar to most lay people . The mini model you held up could be the neck of a jellyfish. It would be helpful to instead use a a knee-to-foot model and point out the specific knee components, muscles and ligaments you mention.

Several wrong bits of information in this video. Research done in past 10-15 YEARS shows the VMO has minimal if any impact on knee tracking. Work your hip muscles which attach around the knee joint, especially the abductors/ outside hip muscles. (I am a PT). Check out Bob and Brad’s YouTube channel on chrondomalacia/patella femoral syndrome for some good tips for knee care. The McConnell tape helps. Same came be done w/ kinesiotape.

"Patellofemoral Syndrome – Anterior Knee Pain" – aren't long words fun !

I got a letter from the * * * Department of the hospital. The letter said it was from the "Otorhinolarygology Department". The letter was an appointment – so the fridge magnets came in handy. A few days later, staring aimlessly at the fridge, I thought 'They've spelled that incorrectly' – despite the fact I'd never seen the word before ! (Yes, I'll let you work out what the 3 stars represent 😉 )

More recently, I wrote 'scrototesticular' – despite the fact it's not in THE dictionary (OED) and I've never used the word before – but we all know what it means 😉

You'll be pleased to know the antibiotics worked 🙂 – and things are gradually settling down !

When rough surface develops under the knee cap, can it revert back to smooth surface if proper alignment is achieved and pressure is relieved?

I have some grinding in a specific position but it causes no pain, I'd like there to be no grinding for longevitiy reasons obviously.

Hello! 🙂 I was wondering if your knee giving way is normal with this as well. We went into the doctor thinking my symptoms were from my knee that I hyperextended about 2 years back. We went through physical therapy so I could get back to using my knee normally but it never really healed. My knee giving away and the pain are really the only symptoms that bother me now, I’ve gotten pretty used to everything else. We went into the doctor and he did a short examination and told me that I probably have this. We are going back soon to talk to the sports specialist, but I’m pretty worried. Sports have always been a big part of my life and not being able to play has really effected me.

I was diagnosed with patellar tendonitis after over use and over contracting my knee in the wrong way…. Tendons are healed as there is no pain on them…. What I'm left with since Feb 2021 is inside of above knee muscle which is so tight I cannot stand to bear my own weight or walk with easw…. I'm not sure if it's this condition you are speaking about.
However my scans show no issues with joints and good cartilage, no issues bending leg just tightness which makes it difficult to walk or bear weight. I've been advised to massage the area in particular cupping, rehabilitation exercises

Thank you for the video, I have been diagnosed with patella formella syndrome 2 & half years ago, tried anti inflammatory and pain killers with physio but did not help, took cortisone 6 months ago and continued physio but looks like injection has worn off and pain is worse than before. It’s affecting my mental health. Sounds likeI am never going to be back to normal or pain free

  8. Based Debil32 says:

Regarding PFS, could a strength imbalance between the hamstrings/glutes and the quadriceps be a culprit for chronic anterior knee pain?

In my experience, I never had knee pain in my life from running before I started weightlifting. When I started weightlifting, I did squats (pain free and with good form) but skipped a bit too often on deadlifts, and became possibly even more quad dominant while neglecting the posterior chain. Thats when I felt knee pain after my usual runs that never gave me pain before. I ruled out overtraining, and assume, that it might be caused by said imbalance, since runners often talk about quad dominance being a culprit for runners knee.

Doc told me I had relatively tight quads that pulled on my patella while running. Also I feel that glute activation relieves the tightness in my knees atleast for a while.

Would like to hear your professional opinion on that!

Hello doc I’ve been having knee pain around the knee joint for the past 3 weeks the doctors said they were concerned that it’s a meniscal tear but I don’t have any symptoms of that and I didn’t feel any pain when I did the test. I can extend my knee all the way but there is pain and grinding and cracking when I do that .Also when I stand on it for a while it hurts and can get a little bit stiff but I can walk on it without to much pain and sleep comfortably. What exactly do you think the problem is ?

  11. zahra shirmohamadi says:

    hi
    thank you docs
i have question about 27 years old football player who has acl surgery with hamstring graft
and he has lit problem in his inner knee
i was wondering if traction of patella would help him to reduce the pain,or do you think it would be more chance to be from his minisc
i know he needs to be visited by doc but its out of curiosity, i am athletic trainer
    i hope you the best

Thank you for the video. I was recently diagnosed with PFPS (with pain on the inside of my knee and below the kneecap at times). I have been having issues for over 3 years now, but has gotten worse over the past year and a half. We have tried braces, NSAIDs, the RICE method, and extensive PT (months at a time, every day, up to 2 hours a day, and exercises at home, for the past three years). The pain has prevented me from getting out of bed at times and limits my daily activities. We are unsure how bad it is right now, going for an MRI on the 3rd. Would it be crazy to ask what other options there are.

  13. Jeffrey Whitaker says:

I have crepitus when I extend and contract my knee. My Dr. Dx me with Chondro via MRI.. I want to know what's the criteria to know WHEN its time to have surgery. I don't want to hear about cortizon injectrions, rehab exercises etc, plasma, etc. That shit don't work. I want to know about SURGICAL interventions… My knee buckles at times, I can no longer squat at the knees and come up without pushing down on the floor with my hands to help getting up from a squat position, and I have pain when I bend at the knees. I don't take meds YET for the pain . Luckily it doesn't hurt to walk so I'm still able to golf. I want to know more about the surgery and hear testimonials from people who had this Chondro and how their knees feel AFTER surgery.

I have petella tracking lateral and I play volleyball both indoor and outdoor i play school ball and club ball, Ive been going to Pt for maybe 2 or 3 months top I got twice a week for a hour and I also do the workouts and stretches at home I’ve been having extreme pain to where it hurts for me to walk on it or out any type of pressure I can’t run without it hurting I can’t squat I can’t jump and that’s all that my sport does I went back to the doctor he said nothing is wrong with me and that I have to continue with pt but nothing has changed it still hurts what should I do? I’m running out of options I’m looking at YouTube for help now

  15. Nikki Melton says:

I was diagnosed with this at 13 in both knees. After a lot of different therapies my right knee improved but not the left. I ended up having a lateral release surgery on the left at 14 and cartilage removed at 17. My left knee never felt normal with continued pain, weakness and instability. I just figured it was a fact of life. At 47 I had a patellofemoral resurfacing arthroplasty and MPFL ligament reconstruction. Except for the long rehab and a minor setback a month after surgery from arthrofibrosis and having to go back to the OR for a manipulation it has been 8 years of pure bliss – no more pain, no subluxing, or giving out. You are right – I remember my parents being frustrated with me because they just didn't understand how I could be in so much pain from activities most kids have no problems with.

  16. Lazaros G. says:

I dont want to hate on you guys, but you give outdated advice on this video.. Newest research has shown that VMO can not be isolated and its not the main cause of the problem like you indicated.. PFPS can be caused by weak hips(glut med/min) and also feet(overponation ect), its multifactorial and normally it is caused by poor biomechanics.. As physio myself, we look at the whole leg and spot the lacking areas that they could be causing the problem..Peace

9 months ago I slipped and kinda did a semi-split on my right leg….6 month after having an F.A.I surgery. On top of hurting my hip again I also hurt my knee. It has hurt consistently everyday and is starting to get worst. My Mri revealed a high kneecap, mild lateral patella tilt , minimal low grade fissure in the medial femoral condyle and a small joint effusion. I have been strengthening my glute medius and vmo consistently and it is not helping. I do find it hard to engage my quads on the injured side since hurting my knee. I have had this pain before when I first started having hip problems 3 years ago, but it resolved itself within 4 months. Buts it's been 9 months now and no improvement. I don't know what to do anymore…

  18. Johanna Sibri says:

I was diagnosed with tendinitis when I was 16 and stopped playing soccer for 6 months. Did therapy and self care, but when I kicked the ball my knee will hurt even more. Now, I’m 23 and all I have done it’s ice after a workout or soccer. But I’m tired of the pain! I want to exercise without pain. My doctor keeps telling me it’s tendinitis but I doubt it. Cause I can’t even get get down on my knees, it hurts and sometimes it sounds like rubber. I was told by two doctors and a personal trainer that I have flat feet. I have to work on that, and just thinking about this condition in 20 years? I feel like I won’t be able to accomplish my dream job; assistant surgery! But thanks for this info!

  19. Animesh Upadhyay says:

In my case, I already had a mild patellofemoral syndrome, and I was diagnosed with osteoclastoma and got operated for it. The surgery didn't enter my joint capsule as the tumor hadn't entered the cortex. After exercising the leg for a year, it seems fine. I wanted to ask about the prognosis of early arthritis or severe patellofemoral syndrome in my case.

    Thank you for your help.

Hi Docs .I torn my midial miniscus while playing t.tennis .after i ve seen a.doctor i ve done MRI scan i was told i need that medial miniscus shaved off and all be fine after a month or two
.But now it's been 3 months and a half Post the Op. I ve been tru phisio icing and all that .But my knee still hurts but differently its more like this patelafemoral pain .My pain is no longer to the medial side of my leg its now in the middle of my kneecap I cant run or jump .Why do you think that happened ?I ve been doing loads of cycling and stretching .Stopped any high impact sports.I am 35 do you think i ll be able to run or jump again ? Thanks .

  21. Sara S says:

I’ve been through months of pt but now went to a new sports dr he first did a brace now he sent me to pt and to try a taping method and so far the brace helps a lil but the tape idk yet at times i feel it helps other times i feel it doesn’t ! i was diagnosed with patella femoral stress syndrome ! luckily my dr said if my pain doesn’t subside by summer he’ll refer me to sports med surgeon who will try other things not surgery but will find other non surgical ways to reduce the pain !

  22. Tanya Stinson says:

I have recently been diagnosed with this. Sadly, after my ortho exam, my knee hurt FAR worse. (I was kinda sad I went) Anyway it has been almost a week and it is finally feeling almost as good/bad as it did when I went in for the exam, but I am now having back outside knee pain that almost radiates down the outside of my leg. 🙁 I have planned on starting physical therapy this week but I really do not want to go back to my ortho. (the man is a sadist) Will the physical therapist be able to address this additional issue?

  23. Michael Napolitano says:

I had makoplasty 9 years ago on both knees. Now my x-ray shows arthritis behind the kneecap on my right knee. I have severe pain only at night. I can't have injections because I have metal parts in my knees from makoplasty (partial knee surgery). I was told because of that I am prone to infections if I have injections. I am trying to avoid full knee replacement for a couple more years as I am still fairly young. Can I have just that portion of the knee replaced? Why am I only getting pain at night when laying down. I tried elevating knee, talking Ibuprofen, etc. nothing works.

  24. M_ D says:

I love how they say discomfort, when it can be screaming pain. I've always wanted to whack the doc in the knee and tell them the pain is in their head as I've been told. Skyline or sunrise view doesn't always show all kneecap issues.
Edit: I had a PFJR (patella femoral joint replacement) almost 11 years ago and it was so amazing in the pain relief. Sadly other knee needs it and a back surgery keeps me very sedentary so weight is becoming an issue and the button gave out this summer. But it was wonderful. Just wish I could have done the other knee too. Stairs, walking in general are hella painful. 24/7 level 6 to 7 pain in non op knee and now increasing pain in failing op knee. Hoping to get both fixed up this year so I can get back to work.

  25. TheMissMaggs says:

I'm so happy to hear some doctors address this! I have accessory naviculars in both feet so am extremely flat footed. Add to that puberty and I have an increased Q angle (knock kneed). With time this caused pretty significant subluxation of my patella in both knees (you could feel the patella popping in and out every time I bent my knees) and patellofemoral syndrome. I went to 6 orthopedic surgeons before it was properly diagnosed. I had to have lateral retinacular releases on both knees and will eventually need osteotomies and cartilage transplantation on both knees, and maybe knee replacements someday. This was one of the most frustrating things I have gone through- I had 3 of the orthos tell me the pain was in my head and I should try an antidepressant. But it's been amazing since surgery. I went from an 7-8/10 for pain to a 0-1/10 pain thanks to surgery. My point in this rant? THANK YOU for addressing it. Most cases aren't as severe as mine but to know more doctors than just the one I have seen recognize it gives me hope.
Edit: We found out during surgery I have a grade II arthritis on my lateral tibial plateau of my right knee. And that was found when I was 22. I can tell it has gotten worse since thanks to pain in winter that I never used to have. I'm 35 now.

  26. Jenn L says:

Thank you for this video. It has increased my knowledge on possibilities that may happen now that I got my MRI results on my left knee. I have been suffering from this pain for 15 years now. The results were not as bad from the MRI since they did a special ultra sound, and it showed my mediscous was badly damaged, the tendons surrounding the knee cap and behind where fraying. MRI revealed only that the cartilage has been softened behind the knee cap. We already knew the knee cap was sitting too high. Mediscous was fine as were the surrounding tendons. He has referred me to a surgeon for a possible shaving of the cartilage to help it glide better. I will know once I have met with the surgeon on what route we will be taking.

  27. Chris V. Noire. says:

Why is surgery a last resort if every other treatment can end up with arthritis in later years?? if its structural then any other treatment, shots etc is just offering pain relief while damage continues to take place right?
