Thank you so much for this video! As a Lifeguard, I am supposed to understand the Glasgow Coma Scale to a basic level, and this really helped.
They told me my husband’s GCS was 3 when he was found at 6:30 am on Monday by the side of the road, having apparently struck a metal light pole head-on after his bicycle was crowded by a car.
At 8:30 pm on Wednesday he got out of his ICU bed, lifted the wooden chair by the bed, broke the window with it, walked back and forth past the broken window (along the hurricane baffle) and fell or jumped to his death from the 8th floor.
I think they missed something.

I was in a long coma, lasting several years, due to a rare fungal infection of the brain, specifically, Candida Dubliniensis. I wasn’t immunocompromised when this happened, which saved my life.
My surgeon did extensive surgery to remove the Candida, to repair hemorrhages and multiple vp shunt revision. I’ve tried to read up on what’s happened to me, but not a lot of information about this, my surgeon said mine may be an unique case, for more than one reasons. I tested low to very low on the Glasgow coma scale, until about 2 years ago, I’m still in cognitive therapy. I have tried to read about what’s happened to me, including my low GCS scale, but I haven’t really understood it until now. Thank you so much for explaining.

Hi, my daughter has severe learning difficulties, CVI, non-verbal and unusual responses to pain. Does this render the GCS as worthless? How would you recognise her issues without someone who knows her well being present?

So how do you test a patient who is intubated, has swollen eyes and is paralyzed?
Unless you know the patients name then asking their name isn’t the best question you could ask. I’d suggest asking them where they are and why, and season and year
