I ran a Motor Grader for the County in which we lived for several years. They gave me a couple days riding with an older guy who had been running one for YEARS, first for the Sea Bees in WW 2 scraping out roads and ground mostly made of dead coral and coral sand so they could cover it with steel mesh panels to land Aircraft of all types on as we advanced across the Pacific Ocean chasing the Japanese. Then when the war ended he got a job building roads for the US Forest Service in the Rockies of the Western United States. Before coming back home and working as a County Road Maintenance Operator. Anyway long story short he taught me as much as he could in the 3-8 hour days they gave me to learn….( They didn't exactly set it up so I would be successful that was obvious to me after the first day of my "Training" ) I took over for a guy who had medical problems and retired early but I didn't inherit his Machine….oh no….I got one of the oldest gear drive Motor Graders the County owned to run….a wrist breaker the old guys called them because of how the gear boxes that controlled the blade would "Kick back" or Jump violently with out warning and if you didn't have a death grip on the controls….well that's why they called them knuckle busters or wrist breakers.
Anyhow my Trainer did his absolute best in the 3 days they gave him so this is no fault of his.
After the first week on my own our supervisor hunted me down because we had a tight schedule we had to stick to as to what roads got maintained on what days….so anyway he ran me down and stopped me and told me every farmer that lived on my route had called in saying how badly I had messed up their roads. And if I didn't straighten them up and start doing my job I would be fired….I didn't even get a chance to spit out a single word before he spun around and got back in his truck and he was gone.
So going home that night I came up with a plan….I knew a guy a little older than me who ran motor graders and Track-Hoes for a local road building crew and I called him up, explained my problem and he said to call him back in about 15 min. I did and he called his boss who was a guy that hunted with my Grandfather several times each winter so because of that he agreed to let me come after I got off work each day and on weekends and ride with my friend so I could learn and boy did I learn….first the newer models that were all hydraulic were so much smoother and easier to run then that the brand new ones were coming out with on board gps and computers that worked in conjunction with laser levels….holy crap I had a lot to learn but learn I did and I spent nearly a month riding with my friend Tim and then he put me behind the controls of their older machine that was identical to the one I was running and in no time I could grade and make roads smooth then re cover them with the gravel pile by rolling it across the road every so many days and learned what roads got most high speed use what roads got semi loads of corn hauled on them rain snow or shine….It didn't matter I could keep those roads smooth and in great shape……needless to say I never saw the supervisor out on the roads again to give me hell…mostly from then on it was because he wanted to ask me real polite like if I would come help his crew with a washed out bridge or road in a sand canyon that had caved off…..the fat no good lazy S.O.B…..all I ever saw him do was give a shovel handle someplace to rest….
    Lol.

Well I guess I'm going to have to be the odd man out, or the spoiler.
    Yes the operator is proficient.
However I have seen the same type of work done via GPS guidance, without an operator at the wheel.
Therefore I have to give all the credit to the machine. Amazing piece of machinery.

  3. Chris Archer says:

Question for all you experience grader operators how does one get into one of these with zero experience I have run heavy equipment but it has been a dream of mine to run one of these where do you start do you go to school to get a certificate or do you go to a company and get them to train you which is the best course of action thank you in advance

  4. Joe Gelencser says:

Any more on it can grade something if it's Consistent and dry try grating something that's one thing and something else and bunched up inside and powder and pieces of different stuff that takes a real greater operator not this shit
